Jerger scissor aerial work platform helps community art construction

Bob Nelson is Vice President of Oshkosh Corporation, the world's leading manufacturer of aerial work platforms and telehandlers JLG (Jerger) Vice President of North American Sales. Over the years, Bob has successfully assisted many rental companies in accurately selecting the most suitable aerial work platform based on different application requirements. But the job application proposed by the leasing client Best Line was encountered by Bob for the first time in his life. This time, JLG and Best Line jointly donated two JLG scissor aerial work platforms 1930ES and were shipped to downtown Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, where large tile frescoes were installed on the external walls of the two buildings.

Inspiration for fresco creation during the trip

Color fresco was inspired by Holly Strayer. Strayer, a high school teacher in Chambersburg City, visited the famous mosaic mural artist Isaiah Zagar during her tour of Philadelphia. The artist's winning work spreads over more than 200 walls in Philadelphia and around the world. Strayer was attracted by these inspirational works, which led to the idea of mural paintings in downtown Chambersburg. “This will not only make City of Chambersburg a more vibrant and beautiful place, but also allow art to enter. The community lets students feel the great charm of art."

Strayer immediately contacted him through Zagar's website to learn more about what he needed to implement the project, including fees and materials. After learning the details of the mural creation, Strayer shared his ideas with the Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce president and members of Chambersburg City Co., Ltd., accompanied by them and received their encouragement; Strayer also came through Facebook. Recruited materials, recruited volunteers and opened GoFundMe account to raise funds.

Helping everyone to fly community art dreams

Strayer's goal is to raise 20,000 U.S. dollars for walls, leasing equipment, and purchasing supplies. Surprisingly, no matter whether it is individuals, local companies, or JLG, Rotary Club, Patriot Federal Credit Union, everyone is generous. In just one month, she raised a total of $24,000, and only $5,000 was raised on the GoFundMe account.

“We also have to refuse some volunteers because the number of applicants exceeds our needs. I hope to attract as many people from the community as possible to participate in the project. In fact, we do.” Strayer thoughtfully Say.

Strayer estimates that the completion of two groups of murals requires a team of 30-50 volunteers. Among them, a fresco painting with a width of 20.73 meters and a height of 4.57 meters is located in the Deli building on the main road. Another wall painting with a width of 11.28 meters and a height of 4.57 meters is located on the Foundry building. Before the volunteers started, Zagar needed to use black paint to create and sketch original frescoes.

JLG Aerial Work Platform is the key to the completion of frescoes

The work of the volunteers was based on a sketch created by Zagar, pasted mirror tiles, and then cemented the production process. This time you need to use the JLG scissor aerial work platform.

“We can also use ladders or scaffolding,” Strayer said. “But I don’t think it’s safe. I don’t want volunteers to be insecure. So, I’m on Facebook and I’m looking for a more stable device. When Bob responds to me, At the time, I told him that we needed a device that could move autonomously on narrow sidewalks so volunteers could get in touch with the entire mural.”

After Bob proposed a solution, Best Line and JLG jointly donated two JLG scissor aerial work platforms 1930ES to arrive on site to support. "This is one of the ideal applications for scissor lifts," Bob said. "The compact design makes it ideal for use on sidewalks. The space of the platform can accommodate two volunteers and all the materials they need to draw a mural." Because volunteers do not have to climb ladders, they can free up two hands to paste tiles without having to worry about falling. In addition, when painting a new part of a mural, a self-propelled device is easier to move.”

"Without these donated aerial work platforms, we couldn't carry out the project at all," Strayer said with emotion. For Bob, this is the best testimony he has ever heard.

“I'm very happy that our aerial work platform has performed well as always,” he said. “I'm pleased that with the help of Best Line, we were able to participate in the project and use donated equipment to benefit the city of Chambersburg. Citizens."

Community spirit helps projects succeed

Strayer believes that it is with the generous donation of companies like JLG that the financial support from all walks of life and volunteers' selfless dedication can make the project a success. Strayer has already begun to conceive more murals to add vitality to downtown Chambersburg.

“I am very glad to see everyone in the community come together for the common good. As an art teacher, I have found that art can get out of the classroom, into the places where we live and work, and inspire people’s creativity. Very creative because it fosters a sense of belonging in the community.”
