Argonne Laboratories to Develop New High Temperature Membrane Ethylene Will Set off the Revolution of Ethylene Production Industry

The US Department of Energy Argonne National Laboratory has developed an environmentally friendly new ethylene process that could cause the industrial revolution in ethylene production, the most basic organic chemical in the world.
The Argonne laboratory has designed a high-temperature membrane that allows the removal of pure hydrogen from methane vapor to produce ethylene. The new process is cleaner and more energy efficient than previous high-cost, high-pollution processes. This high-temperature membrane only allows hydrogen to pass through, and the methane gas cannot be in contact with the gaseous oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere, thus avoiding the disadvantages of the conventional ethane cracking and ethylene production process, which can easily produce harmful gases such as nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. Each year, global ethylene producers produce about 75 million tons of ethylene, which causes millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
Traditional cracking ethylene processes require constant heat input, and Argonne's hydrogen penetrating membrane (HTM) can directly generate the fuel needed for the reaction. Hydrogen that has penetrated on one side of the membrane reacts with oxygen in the air, providing the required energy for the entire process, saving energy input. In addition, the new membrane reactor can change the conversion of reactants to products by continuously removing hydrogen, producing more ethylene products than theoretical equilibrium values.
Since the use of this membrane can reduce the ethylene production process steps and save costs, the research group expects to cooperate with the industry to realize the commercial production of high-temperature membranes as soon as possible.
