Audi new technology: its vehicles can communicate with signal lights

According to a report from Reuters on August 16, according to a report from Reuters, German automaker Audi launched new technology that allows vehicles in the U.S. region to communicate with traffic lights, making it easier for drivers to drive. Audi said that this is the first time the automotive industry has commercialized the technology.

Audi announced that some of the 2017 Q7 and A4 models produced after June 1 this year will be equipped with this "vehicle to infrastructure" (V-to-I) technology. Using V-to-I technology, traffic lights and other infrastructure can wirelessly transmit safety and other operational data to the vehicle through the cloud.

"This is our first attempt to use this technology. It is not only a security function but also a comfort and convenience function," said Pom Malhotra, general manager of Audi's Connected Vehicles division.

Application scenario

With Audi's new system, the vehicle can display the countdown time before the red light turns green. Malhotra said that knowing how long the lights will turn green will greatly reduce driver anxiety.

In addition, if the vehicle determines that it cannot cross the intersection before the traffic light turns red, it will also display a countdown time on the dashboard, allowing the driver to start braking.

At the same time, while waiting for the red light to turn green, the countdown timer will disappear a few seconds before the signal light turns green, forcing the driver to pay attention to the intersection and determine whether it is safe to drive.

In the future, this technology can also be connected to the car's navigation system, or the car's stop/start function. Audi executives stated that another possible feature is that the traffic lights suggest that the vehicle keep moving at a specific speed to keep up with changes in traffic lights.

It is reported that Audi plans to deploy this technology one by one in five US cities this year.

At present, many auto manufacturers are trying to use technology. However, the deployment of such systems is also challenging because V-to-I and V-to-V technologies require not only a secure communications infrastructure but also close cooperation with the municipal and transportation sectors.
