Zhang Kai, director of the Greenpeace Pollution and Prevention Program, introduced that between April and May 2011, Greenpeace purchased 78 samples of 15 clothing brands in China, the United Kingdom, and Argentina. Greenpeace sent the samples to a qualified third-party laboratory for testing. The results showed that 2/3 of the samples including Adidas, Li Ning, etc. were detected to contain NPE.
According to reports, NPE is often used as a surfactant in textile production and discharged into the environment and quickly decomposed into nonylphenol (NP). NP is a recognized environmental hormone that mimics estrogen and affects the sexual development of organisms, interferes with endocrine organisms, and is toxic to the reproductive system.
"This test result is also a confirmation of the previous one." Zhang Kai said that these well-known clothing brands at home and abroad not only supply hazardous substances to rivers during the production process, but their products themselves also contain such substances. Although the materials on the clothing will not directly harm the human body, they will also drain into the river as they accumulate in the washing process, threatening the environment and human health.
Greenpeace appealed to Adidas and Li Ning and other brands to make drug-free promises as soon as possible and formulate action plans with a clear timetable.
Relevant parts of the brand promise to detox
Greenpeace made a commitment to phase out all toxic and hazardous substances in its supply chain by 2020, two weeks after the publication of the investigation report "Fashion Poison - China's Water Pollution Survey for Global Apparel Brands" in July. Within eight weeks, an open plan of action was formulated; Nike also made a "detoxification" commitment last week, and will openly disclose information on the use and release of toxic and hazardous substances to the public.
